Barangay Captain Joel Briones, 47, the current president of the Association of Barangay Captains in Bicol, died on the spot after a lone gunman riddled his body with bullets as confirmed by a report from the regional police office in Legazpi City on Monday.
DONSOL, Sorsogon — The village chief of Barangay Tinagonan of this town was shot multiple times by a lone gunman on Sunday afternoon.
The fatality was Joel Briones, 47, the current president of the Bicol Association of Barangay Captains who died on the spot after a lone gunman riddled his body with bullets as confirmed by a report from the regional police office in Legazpi City on Monday.
Briones swas shot eight times in different parts of the body while sitting in front of a sari-sari store.
Earlier, the village official had presided over a barangay assembly in Barangay Tinagonan here at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Responding police authorities recovered eight empty shells of a caliber .45 pistol.
The lone gunman immediately fled the crime scene before responding police officers arrived.
But the Bicol regional police spokesperson Sr. Insp. Malou Calubaquib identified the alleged killer as Edgar Magtibay. The suspect is also known as alias Edgar Garcia, 48 yearls old.
Magtibay, according to the police, is an alleged notorious drug personality in the barangay. Much earlier, he surrendered to the local police under Oplan Tokhang program.
The municipal police office in Donsol volunteered the information on the motive for the killing as revenge.
Acting town police chief Sr. Insp. Joel Trinanes said that Briones was very avtive in the anti-illegal drug campaign in his barangay.
Briones represented the regional barangay association in the signing of an agreement with the regional police office in support of the Philippine National Police campaign against the proliferation of illegal drugs in the region. (with PNA report by Jorge Hallare)
