Unboxing The House of Ciriaco Hernandez

Ciriaco Hernandez was the eldest son of eight siblings (but there could be more) in his branch of the clan on the 5th generation of the forked branch of the Fernandezes. This is based from available data, with the ‘1st’ generation pegged on the year of 1784.

I have to mention this early, as there could be one or two siblings older than him but which no data can be sourced as of this writing. Also true in many of the members of the clan on both sides of the Fernandezes and Hernandezes, some children who perished during their early years I had difficulty mining the data, or at least acquiring any hint so far.

Fast forward on January 18, 1904, Ciriaco Hernandez and Demetria Francisco were married at the church of Nuestra Senora de la Porteria in Calabanga. Standing as sponsors and witnesses of the event were Justiniano Falcon and Ana Aguilar, while the ceremony was officiated by Padre Manuel Crisol.

Demetria was the daughter of Andres Francisco and Alvina de la Cruz from the town of Siruma, Camarines Sur.

Their marriage was fruitful through the years. The couple was showered with a handful of children. Unfortunately, I found through research by birth, marriage and death records only seven children, even as I was informed there should be 11 in all.

Felicidad was the first born two years after the marriage, on Nov 11, 1906, Rufina on March 14, 1919, Maria on August 16, 1923, and Dolores in 1930. These first four were able to enjoy age beyond their golden years. They were all girls.

The last three did not: Jose, born on September 29, 1909, Juana on October 28, 1910, and Emilia, on December 3, 1915.

While documents are on hand supporting their birth years, I have a hunch there could be more children on this branch of the family tree, judging from birth year gaps, which prods me to conclude that others may have perished either during their birth, early childhood, teenage, or young or even on adult years. Or, even during the war years! Unfortunately, I can not find any document to support this, though.

I may drop a second article on the ‘House of Felicidad Hernandez and her siblings’ later.

Let me expound a bit about the age and marriage of Ciriaco and Demetria.

The death certificate of Ciriaco (Lolo Akoy to his grandchildren) states he was aged 88 on Jan 18, 1972, and claimed to be born on May 3, 1890. A glaring discrepancy, as 1890 to 1972 only meant 82 years, so the correct year must be 1884.

Also, May 3, 1890 was actually the birthdate of another Ciriaco Hernandez (a copy of the birth record is in our file), first cousin of his, being the second son of his father’s brother. A copy of the younger Ciriaco is on file for reference. So that confirming our hunch there were two Ciriacos in his generation of the expanded family tree. That name has never again appeared or was used on the succeeding generations!

Lolo Akoy’s birth year is an important reference data. If he married Demetria in 1904, he with a birth year of 1890, then would have entered into a marriage contract at age 14. If his birth year was 1884, he was almost or near or about the age of 20 during the marriage date.

So that, Lolo Akoy really lived a full life of 88 years, no more no less.

Then we focus on the death certificate of Lola Tiang, her grandchildren fondly referred to her. Available copy of death certificate stated that she was aged 76 on August 3, 1972, as claimed to be born on July 20, 1896. If she got married on the year of 1904, she with a birth year of 1896, then would have entered into a marriage contract at age 8!

Then, Lola Tiang’s correct and actual birth year should be 1892. In that case, she married Ciriaco at age of 12. And she lived a full life until the age of 80 instead of 76.

Which gives us the strong fact and proved that Ciriaco was 20 and Demetria was 12 when they were married by Padre Manuel Crisol at the altar of the parish church of Nuestra Senora de la Porteria in Calabanga on a Monday of January 18, 1904.
