Typhoon Nina extends Christmas vacation of students in Naga city, including some areas of Camarines Sur. Yes, you read it right.

Not only did howler typhoon Nina brought extensive damage on crops and properties in some Bicol provinces.

The typhoon also tripped the power in the region.

Sustaining damages, the on-grid area transmission lines by the Transmission Corporation of the Philippines like the one connecting with the Naga-Daraga 230KV line and the Naga-Pili-Iriga line servicing the provinces of Albay, Sorsogon and Camarines Sur.

As a domino effect, other than the area sub-stations, local area distribution lines sustained damages too. Various electric cooperatives also sustained operational disruptions, big time, mostly in the form of downed power poles.

At least, personnel from NGCP and electric cooperatives from other regions joined in the power line restoration work.

But since many areas are still without electric service, local government units take turns in advising schools on the need to cancel scheduled classes on Wednesday.

Some of the schools, after the recommendation from Naga City Mayor John Bongat, has confirmed resumption of classes on the 9th of January, include:

  • Unibersidad de Sta Isabel – All levels
  • University of Nueva Caceres – All levels
  • Ateneo de Naga University – All levels

But then, employees and faculties were directed to report as part of the skeletal force to inspect respective facilities if only to ensure readiness upon re-opening day.

For his part, Governor Miguel Luis Villafuerte of Camarines Sur issued today (Jan. 2) a memo suspending classes in municipalities covered by congressional districts 2, 3, 4, and 5 to resume on January 9, 2016.
