Seven Albay LGU’s get warning for non compliance of eco-solid waste management law.
Seven local government units in Albay province has been cited for failure to strictly comply with proper waste disposal management as mandated in the Ecological Solid Management Act of 2000.
This was echoed by a top honcho of the Bicol region office of Environment Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
EMB regional director Roberto Sheen on Friday identified these local government units may soon face environmental charges with the Office of the Ombudsman as Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Polangui and Tiwi and Tabaco City.
The six Albay towns were among the 50 towns and cities across the country included in the first batch of LGUs that were assessed and validated by the NSWC to be non-compliant of the law despite repeated warnings.
Based on the National Solid Waste Commission guidelines, warned LGUs will be given six months upon receipt of the advice to make the necessary compliance based on the parameters set by the law.
The six LGU’s used open dumps in their waste disposal and despite the warnings failed to close the sites.
Households in these areas do not practice the waste segregation process for biogradable, non-biogradable and residual waste materials, too. Findings also showed the towns of Daraga, Camalig and Tiwi have no material recovery facilities.
The commission found out that while all six LGUs submitted their respective 10-year solid waste plans, they were not implemented and only five submitted the safe closure and rehabilitation plan.
Polangui is the hometown of Albay Gov. Joey Salceda, Guinobatan is the place of Environment Secretary Ramon Paje while Tiwi is the hometown of Paje’s wife.
