Inmate bolts Sorsogon prison, another dies in Masbate jail

LEGAZPI CITY, July 21 — Residents have expressed concern over the situation in local jails after a prisoner escaped from the city district jail in Barangay Balogo, Sorsogon City on Sunday afternoon while an inmate died of ailment inside his detention cell in Masbate early Monday morning.

According to the police report inmate Carlos Espera Tiu, of Purok 8, Barangay Sampaloc, Sorsogon City, escaped at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday by destroying the lock of his detention cell, jumping over the fence and running towards the direction of Sitio Little Mahingang in this city.

JO3 Antonio Calinao, JO2 Rommel Hernandez and JO1 Rolly Malagueno went after the suspect but failed to catch him.

Tiu was detained for violating the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Meanwhile, another prisoner was found dead inside his cell in the Masbate Provincial Jail in Barangay Matiporon, Milagros, Masbate, early Monday morning.

A police report said prisoner Jose James Francisco, separated and resident of Barangay Mabuhay, Balud, Masbate, was jailed for a rape case.

Provincial jail guard-in-charge Lasadani Sta. Cruz said the victim was found dead inside his cell around 4:00 a.m. of Monday.

Francisco complained of feeling extreme cold and high fever, for which fellow inmate Ramil Torrecampo gave him medicine.

After about one hour later, Torrecampo noticed that the victim was no longer moving.

Sta. Cruz immediately called a doctor from the Balud Municipal Health Unit who pronounced the prisoner dead. (PNA)
