In Bicol, more local public officials, many on elective posts, are among drug surrenderees according to the last tally by the Philippine National Police. Some 351 public officials in the region, mostly barangay officials, suspected of being drug personalities have surrendered to authorities from July 1 to October 21.
Bicol Regional Police director Chief Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe believes the count is expected to increase as the number of public officials will surrender as Operations Tokhang and Double Barrel by the PNP continue.
To the total count of 351 belong some 346 barangay officials and five city and municipal councilors.
Of the 346 village officials, 47 were barangay chairpersons, 202 councilmen, 76 watchmen, seven treasurers, seven secretaries, four chief watchmen, two staff members and one justice committee head.
Buenafe said of the five city and municipal councilors, two were from Albay and one each from Camarines Sur, Catanduanes and Masbate.
Aside from the 351 public officials, the PNP also have in their list 54 other alleged drug personalities who are in government service or are public servants.
Of the listed 54 persons, 34 are government employees, 13 public school teachers, one principal, two policemen, two firemen, one member of the Cafgu (Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit) and one member of the Philippine Army. (PNA)
