LEGAZPI CITY — Six persons died when a Suzuki sports utility vehicle collided head-on with a passenger bus early Sunday morning along the Maharlika Highway in barangay Bacolod, Juban, Sorsogon, a Philippine National Police official in Bicol said.
Inspector Malu Calubaquid, PNP Bicol spokesperson, said the Suzuki SUV with plate number TGO 350 was negotiating the Maharlika Highway in Sitio Hoyon-Hoyon, Barangay Bacolod, Juban town. The vehicle lost control and collided with a Fortune bus with plate number UVB-943.
Quoting a report from the Juban police office, Calubaquid identified the victims as Rosalito Malig, SUV driver, and SUV passengers Alfredo Manansala, Jaime Malabanan, Levy Erasga, and Vicente Clarito, all of Calamba city in Laguna.
Bus driver Danilo Montefalcon of Sampaloc, Manila, also died during the vehicular accident.
Injured were Ronalyn Dosa, Alvin Ruiz, Angelika Pagasertonga, Boy Navarosa and Analiza Macapanas, all passengers of the bus, who sustained minor injuries. The were rushed to the Sorsogon provincial hospital for treatment.
Calubaquid said the victims were brought to the Hadoc Funeral in Juban town for autopsy.
She added initial investigation indicated the driver of the SUV might have lost control of the car’s steering wheel or might have slept when it ran in the opposite direction of the road and collided with the passenger bus.
Calubaquid said the ill-fated SUV was on its way back to Calamba City in Laguna after holding a humanitarian mission in Tacloban City, while the Fortune bus was bound for Tacloban city from Manila.
She said the bus was fully loaded with passengers who would like to visit and spend their New Year with their relatives in Tacloban. (PNA report by Mar S. Arguelles)
