Finally, Albay Governor Joey Sarte Salceda came out with final word on who he will support in the May 9, 2016 elections. The vocal provincial chief ended the speculation on his political plan and confirmed the unwavering support for the candidacy of Grace Poe Llamanzares of the independent Partido Galing at Puso.

A speculation of the governor jumping ship was noted here that Salceda was to junk LP bets because of the unfinished Bicol International Airport then previously promised for completion by the Aquino administration.

But right away, he belied the rumor that Albay’s Gov. Salceda says his statement was grossly picked up and misinterpreted.

Salceda follows another Bicol governor supporting Poe. Much earlier, way before the official opening of the national campaign, Camarines Sur Governor Luis Miguel R. Villafuerte III and his father, former governor Luis Raymond Villafuerte II, has alligned their upcoming campaign with Poe, being with the Nationalist People’s Coalition.

Salceda said he is supporting Poe because “she shares his values of authentic humanism, shares our goals of countryside development and national competitiveness and certainly her compassion will ensure the impact will be shared by all.”

Salceda expressed that his decision is for the good of all Albayanos and for the future of “my country.”

The feisty governor is stepping down as Liberal Party chairperson for the Bicol region and running as an independent candidate of the second legislative district of Albay.

It must be recalled that Salceda bolted the alliance with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo supporting presidential candidate Gilberto Teodoro in the 2010 elections for then candidate Benigno S. Aquino III. Salceda has a “nose” for the winning candidates, it may seem.

The Albay governor’s move is clearly a manifestation that for a Bicolano to win in the vice presidential race political action committee can unify Bicol for common vice presidential candidate. There are four VP candidates claiming family roots in Bicol.
