DENR Bicol to provide mangrove propagules for Sorsogon towns

LEGAZPI CITY — The regional office here of the environment and natural resources department has made a commitment of providing mangrove propagules for the towns of Donsol, Pilar, Casiguran, Magallanes and Sorsogon city.

Learning from the sad experience of the Visayas regions that were badly ravaged by the storm surge, the agency is refocusing its coastal management program with mangrove reforestation involving all the coastal areas of Bicol.

A mature mangrove tree produces unlimited stock of hanging “seedlings” that will become propagules in due time.

The DENR head office has instructions for the undertaking as a measure to strengthen the defenses of the region’s coastal areas from storm surges or any other form of ocean-triggered calamities.

The region’s coastal areas are characterized by the presence of numerous bays and gulfs that are major fishing grounds such as Ragay Gulf, San Miguel Bay and Lagonoy Gulf in Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur; Albay Gulf in Albay; Sorsogon Bay in Sorsogon; and Alimand Ilog and Nin Bays in Masbate.
