Friday evening bomb blast in Davao City kills 10, injured dozens more

First dispatch of sketchy report says that a bomb blast that rocked the Roxas night market near the Ateneo de Davao University in Davao City has an unverified fatality already of 10 and 60 more injured. Davao City is the hometown of President Rodrigo Duterte who is in the forefront of the war on illegal drugs.

A bomb blast kills 10 and injured dozens more in Davao City about 10 in the evening of Friday at the Roxas night market near Ateneo de Davao University.

Police authorities confirmed the incident but has yet to verify the actual number of casualties.

Witnesses disclosed they saw at least ten bodies on the ground after the explosiion.

As a result, the police locked down Davao City.

Philippine National Police XI Director Manuel Gaerlan assured the public that the situation is being handled carefully.

Meanwhile, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte asked for prayers for the victims of the incident.

He assured the authorities are on top of the situation.

“Right now, we cannot yet give definite answer to questions as to who is behind this as we are also trying to determine what really exploded,” Paolo said.

“It’s a sad day for Davao and for the Philippines,” he said.

Gaerlan said a thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the explosion as checkpoints and chokepoints were already established at all exit points in the city.

“We call on all the people to be vigilant at all times and report to the police any suspicious packages or persons,” Gaerlan said in a text message through his spokesperson Chief Inspector Andrea dela Cerna.

Gaerlan urged the public to refrain from creating or passing misleading or unverified reports to avoid confusion and panic.

In a press statement Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said that while no one has yet claimed responsibility for the incident, it is best that the populace refrain from making reckless speculation and avoid crowded places. (with PNA report)
