Math Whiz Kid Hails From Legazpi

The newest toast of the town in Legazpi’s math class circle is this fourth grader enrolled at the Bicol University integrated laboratory school. He is Errol John Zuarez who won one gold medal in the 2010 Singapore international mathematics competition last August 6-10, this year.

Errol’s gold added to the 135 medals and merit awards bagged by the Philippine team which placed second in international rank. China secured 282 medals and merits to outrank nine other delegations.

Nine year old Errol is the only Bicol student among the Filipino group of 92 elementary and 44 high school students-math wizards to be included in the team. Participants were selected from hundreds of math qualifiers around the country.

Errol John is also the youngest student that completed the rigid Kumon Math in the country.

The Philippine team was headed by Dr. Simon Chua, the president of the Mathematics Trainer’s Guild- Philippines, an organization of math experts. It trains Filipino students geared for international math competitions.
