Malacanang has lauded two Filipinos who won in their respective “battles” Sunday and gave their countrymen reasons to smile in times of crisis.
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte congratulated Miss Philippines Ariella Arida for her 3rd runner up finish in the just-concluded Miss Universe pageant held in Moscow, Russia and boxer Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire for scoring a TKO victory against Vic Darchinyan.
“Any sort of positive news would be very welcome and we extend our congratulations to Ms Arida and the Filipino flash for excelling in their particular fields,” Valte said in a radio interview over state-run Radyo ng Bayan.
“We appreciate the efforts to bring a little bit of a smile to our countrymen who are going on so much in the aftermath of the typhoon,” she added.
Donaire and Arida’s wins are seen as a glimmer of hope to calamity-stricken Filipinos who have been facing their own toughest battles this year.
In a span of two months, the country was hit by a deadly 7.2 magnitude earthquake and a supertyphoon.
“We have no doubt our citizens will get up and rise again. We’ve seen in the past that no matter how heavy the calamity is, we’ve always managed to pick ourselves up and get back to our normal lives,” Valte said. (PNA report by Janice M. Cave)
