Boulders, mudflows isolate several barangays of Albay town

GUINOBATAN, Albay, Dec. 9 — Boulders, mudflows isolate several barangays of Albay town. At the height of Typhoon Ruby’s howling wind and torrential rains, car-sized boulders tumbled and vulcanic mudflows ran down the lower slopes of Mayon towards Barangay Maipon of Guinobatan town of Albay.

The heavy debris caused the isolation of several barangays of the town since Saturday last week.

Army Col. Perfecto Penaredondo, commander of the Army 2nd Infantry Battalion based in Tula-Tula Grande, Ligao City, on Monday said car-sized boulders and other volcanic materials tumbled down towards Maipon village here.

Guinobatan disaster risk reducation council official Jun Pavericio said deposited lahar remobilized and rolled down due to torrential rains.

Pavericio, his men and a contingent of military personnel visited Maipon Monday morning and saw that lahar has covered the road network, making it unpassable to all types of vehicles up to now.

Earlier, Phivolcs Bicol chief resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta, warned that remobilization of lahar from Mayon volcano in Albay might occur due to heavy rains.
