What application or software do you use to edit or manipulate photos? Other than the premium app of Photoshop from Adobe which is heavy on the pocket and very prohibitive for a tight budget, there should be an alternative.
Searching on Google for a decent photo editor, and a free one on top of that, is not difficult.
Better yet, just search for GIMP. G-I-M-P. Correct, that’s GIMP.
So we go ahead and search for that, and out of the search results, voila! The search engine even provides a quick reference info on the right side of the screen.
Select that topmost result and the website opens up.
We can hang out for a few minutes and take some time browsing and reading information relative to the app before downloading.
Browsing now, it tells us we are on ‘The Free & Open Source Image Editor’ which it righfully claims. ‘This is the official website of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP)’.
GNU is a Unix-like computer operating system developed by the GNU Project.
So we continue going over and read some salient features of the free app from its website:
Whether you are a graphic designer, photographer, illustrator, or scientist, GIMP provides you with sophisticated tools to get your job done. You can further enhance your productivity with GIMP thanks to many customization options and 3rd party plugins.
High Quality Photo Manipulation.
GIMP provides the tools needed for high quality image manipulation. From retouching to restoring to creative composites, the only limit is your imagination.
Graphic Design Elements.
GIMP is used for producing icons, graphical design elements, and art for user interface components and mockups.
Key Component in a Desktop Publishing Workflow.
GIMP provides top-notch color management features to ensure high-fidelity color reproduction across digital and printed media. It is best used in workflows involving other free software such as Scribus, Inkscape, and SwatchBooker.
Extensibility & Flexibility.
GIMP provides extensibility through integration with many programming languages including Scheme, Python, Perl, and more.
The result is a high level of customization as demonstrated by the large number of scripts and plug-ins created by the community.
Now that we have read more info about GIMP, we are ready to download the program. I’m selecting the orange button to download the install files directly for GIMP version 2.10.14 which was Released 2019-10-31. Also take note the operating system of your computer including the system version.
The compressed file will be saved on the download folder on local C drive. Double clicking the file will cause the installation of the program. Looking into the program files folder, we can confirm the app was really installed.
I then located a shortcut icon on the task bar. Let’s go ahead double click the icon to get a first glimpse of the app. (Shortcut/Start-up icon should be added on desktop, too.)
While recording this, the GIMP app got updated on my notebook and installed the latest version! But the link icon label still shows GIMP 2.10.6.
It takes a few seconds for the program to initialize and start.
So this is how it looks.
On the top left the main menu, then series of child menu, drop down menu, sub-menu, sub-sub-menu anchored from the top left of the screen. It covers the options for file / edit / select / view / layer / colors / tools / filters / windows / and help.
The option help covers help, context help, about GIMP, check more info about the app online which should connect to the website, a user manual and more.
Check out the ready provided short cut for Tools (icons) left sidebar.
Check out also, the set of shortcut tools (icons) on the right sidebar/panel for tools specifically for brushes, patterns, etc.
Since this is only a quick guide for installation and sweeping test, it is our recommendation one has to drive test the program and check out its various usage and application to appreciate.
I am behind uploading stuff, as always, but hope to compensate for that soon. I really appreciate the support so if you subscribe to this channel it will be awesome.
