MASBATE CITY , March 1 — A local tabloid publisher and editor in Masbate province was murdered Saturday.

Ariel Verano Lerit, the publisher-editor of the tabloid Masbate Times was stabbed to death while inside a KTB bar in this city with fellow media personnel Bobby Bornillo.

The unfortunate incident happened just when the two men were preparing to leave the KTV bar.

Lerit sustained two stab wounds in the stomach that caused his instant death. The slain media practitioner is also the barangay captain of Anas, Masbate City.

The editor’s murder happened exactly two weeks after Bohol-based radio broadcaster Maurito Lim was killed by a lone assailant while getting off his vehicle to host his “Chairman Mao on Board” on radio dyRD.

According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Lim was reportedly the 172 journalist killed since 1986. Lerit, then is the 173rd victim of senseless killing of journalists in the country.

This is proof enough that for media practitioners, more so for those based in the provinces, the Philippines is a dangerous place for their line of work and passion.
