APEC plunges Albay 1st district in power blackout.

Legazpi City, Jan. 11 — It might occur to many observers that local power retailer Albay Power and Energy Corporation is playing carrots and sticks all along.

Last Thurdsday morning, Albay Power and Energy Corporation shut down the power connection of thousands of local electric consumers in five municpalities and one city of the province that belong to the first congressional district.

The entire coverage area encompassing the towns of Sto. Domingo, Bacacay, Malilipot, Malinao, Tiwi and the city of Tabaco were plunged into service blackout.

The company management ordered the automatic shutdown of electric connections when it pulled the plug in its two sub-stations in Malinao and Tabaco without advance notice.

The APEC-ordered blackout which lasted for more than 24 hours hurt the business sector and economic activities of the Albayanos. Service was restored in the afternoon of the following day after management decided to restore the service.

The management justified the move alledging that former employees of Albay Electric Cooperative (ALECO) have ransacked the substation tender in Karangahan, Tabaco city on Thursday morning.

The continuing trouble experienced by APEC after taking over the operations from ALECO last year is causing disruptions in electric service.

APEC is a subsidiary of the SMC (San Miguel Corporation) Global Power Holdings Corporation.
