Delos Santos stays as BuCor chief despite resignation, but for a while

He is staying, but for a while.

Yes, Bureau of Corrections director Benjamin Delos Santos, after all, will stay put in his post even as he has tendered an irrevocable resignation last July 13 already.

It was because justice secretary Vitaliano Aguirre ordered him to stay.

What can he do but continue in the performance of his assigned functions, for the meantime, even as he suggested an officer-in-charge (OIC) or an undersecretary can help ensure the continuity of the bureau’s operation.

President Duterte has yet to make known his personal feeling on Delos Santos’s stepping out of BuCor.

Why it was so abrupt that the director want to relinquish his post as soon as Aguirre came up with an order to the National Bureau of Investigation for a probe on the resurgence of drug trade in the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City, is anyone’s guess.

Seen as likely successor to Delos Santos is retired general Dionisio Santiago, still warming the seat as new chief of the Dangerous Drugs Board and previous head of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Santiago was the quick replacement of Benjamin Reyes who was fired by Duterte for contradicting him on the (statistics of) estimated number of drug dependents in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, National Bureau of Investigation Director Dante Gierran was ordered by the justice department to conduct the probe and case build-up on the resurgence of illegal drugs trade in the NBP.

The NBI was also granted the authority to file the appropriate administrative and criminal cases against those responsible when warranted.

For his part, Delos Santos cited the resurgence of narcotics trading at the national penitentiary as the reason for going back to retirement. Was it a direct admission his stay in BuCor was in vain?

  1. For failure to stop unauthorized entry of cellphones going to the hands of inmates, the government is spending millions of gov’t. fund for cellphone signal jammers.. Ridiculous. Just enforce the rule and no need to spend that much. It is an acceptance that NBP personnel failed in their job. .
