The cramped, dirty jail of a Metro Manila city just graced the pages of a European-based publication.
The Daily Mail which has circulation and online site covering States, United Kingdom, Australia and elsewhere around the world captioned its coverage in a deplorable way.
The photo and feature article said that “the fight for survival inside one of the world’s notorious jails: Only the toughest inmates survive Manila’s Quezon City prison as they battle against diseases and abhorrent conditions.”
The news article accompanied with a generous number of good shots but showing how bad the condition of the jail confirms the prevailing deplorable and subhuman condition the situation of the inmates are being made to endure.
It bannerred: “Disease, grime and no room at all: Inside the Philippines most notorious prison where 3,600 inmates live in a space built for 800.”
The Mail featured the QC jail as haven of “Disease, grime and no room at all … (the) Philippines most notorious prison where 3,600 inmates live in a space built for 800.”
As of this posting, the news article has been shared 2.8 thousand in various social media sites and already garnered over 2 thousand comments.
One photo was captioned like: “There is a relentless and constant battle for space, water, food in an unhygienic facility.” Another was captioned: “Men take turns to sleep on the cracked cement floor of an open-air basketball court, the steps of staircases underneath beds and hammocks made out of old blankets.”
How true could it be as claimed by the Mail that “prisoners search for a corner of damp floor to squat against as they sleep, pick rusty nails and dead cockroaches out of their rations of food and suffer rashes and boils caused by the lack of ventilation and water”?
It is not the first time that the previaling predicament of the inmates in the Quezon city jail captured the consciousness of the people, previously, a news network also featured the same horrible situation about the facility which is directly under the Department of Interior and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology. While posting here the dated news about the QC jail, only the date has changed but the prevailing condition remains, or, may have worsened.
