UNFPA supports Albay due its high pro-creative population which tops the region and all provinces in the program

smileredunhappyLEGAZPI CITY, April 11 — UNFPA supports Albay due to its high pro-creative population which tops the region and all participating provinces in the program.

The country representative in the Philippines of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Klaus Bleck, has lauded the very proactive, engaged and being good partner of the province of Albay, last Wednesday at the provincial Astrodome where he was the guest speaker during the Adolescent Congress.

He said that when the collaboration between the UNFPA and Albay through the Provincial Health Office and Albay AIDS Council was firmed up, the province has made significant steps towards the welfare of the youth as the most common issues today are teenage pregnancy, difficulty in finding job, and increasing cases of HIV/AIDS. He stressed that those getting pregnant and suffering from HIV/AIDS are getting younger and younger.

Bleck pointed out that only five out of the 81 provinces in the Philippines have collaboration with the UNFPA — Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato; Saranggani, Surigao Del Sur and Albay. Of the five participating provinces in the program, the province of Albay has the highest in population density at 480/km2 (1,300/sq mi), as compared to Sultan Kudarat at 140/km2 (370/sq mi), North Cotabato at 140/km2 (350/sq mi), Saranggani at 140/km2 (360/sq mi) and, Surigao del Sur at 110/km2 (290/sq mi), all based in the 2010 population census.

On the regional level, Albay province also topped the highest density in population over Sorsogon at 350/km2 (910/sq mi), Camarines Sur at 330/km2 (860/sq mi), Camarines Norte at 230/km2 (610/sq mi), Masbate at 200/km2 (520/sq mi), and Catanduanes at 170/km2 (430/sq mi). The province of Albay has a land area which is almost ten per cent bigger than that of Camarines Norte.

There is good reason that the UNFPA is not only looking at Albay, it is staring at Albay. The highly pro -creative population in the province is alarming if compared to other Bicol provinces. The UNFPA agency is too modest, and coy enough, not to point out that fact, but it is too glaring not to notice.
