“Payong” launched as the state weather bureau’s simplified weather, climate info materials

QUEZON CITY, April 1 –It is not the usual umbrella for the rain or scorching sunshine.

It is the state weather bureau’s series of new tools and information products, for the name Payong PAGASA also include the USAID-supported simplified templates for public dissemination of PAGASA materials.

A play on the Filipino word “Payong” which means both “advice” and “umbrella”, it aims to make easy for the average Filipino to understand the advisories from the agency.

It is designed to help make decisions and take preventative matters to protect their lives and livelihoods.

PAGASA also launched the official icon of Payong PAGASA named Ella the Umbrella — she (it) will be the visual cue that illustrates the effects of weather and climate change in a simple yet engaging way.

The launching was one of the highlights of the 150th Anniversary of PAGASA graced by Department of Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo and United States Agency for International Development Mission Director Gloria D. Steele.
