Rosetta to harpoon Philae lander on a comet. The scientific world is closely monitoring one exciting event that should happen very soon. We are referring to the final hours before Rosetta’s Philae lander is released to attempt a first-ever landing on a comet. Early tomorrow morning (by Western Hemisphere time), the European Space Agency’s Rosetta spacecraft will deploy its comet lander, “Philae.” A little over seven hours later (8 a.m. PST/11 a.m. EST), the experiment-laden, harpoon-firing Philae is scheduled to touch down on the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. It will be the first time in history that a spacecraft has attempted a soft landing on a comet. Rosetta is an international mission led by the European Space Agency (ESA), with instruments provided by its member states, and additional support and instruments provided by NASA.

Nine firms secure prequal docs for LRT Line 2. Nine bidders have bought pre-qualification documents for the Operation and Maintenance of LRT Line 2 project. The first companies that secured PQ documents are LRMC (Ayala-MPIC), San Miguel Corporation, GT Capital Holdings, Inc., Marubeni Corporation, D.M. Consunji, Inc., and RATP Developpment SA. Three more firms have bought the PQ documents: APT Global, Inc., Globalvia, and Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc.

Large Japanese manufacturing firm to set up plant in PH. Top executives of Thermos, the world’s largest manufacturer and seller of stainless steel vacuum flasks, recently announced the company’s move to establish a production facility in the Philippines. Thermos Philippines incoming president Yoshihasu Tamaru said that they expect to complete the facility’s construction by September 2015 and start its production operations by December 2015. He added that the project will require about 1,500 to 2,000 workers by 2019.

DFA receives additional fund for OFW repatriation program. The Philippine government is issuing additional allotment of P50 million to the Department of Foreign Affairs for its overseas Filipino repatriation program. Fund being released by the Department of Budget and Management to the Department of Foreign Affairs will augment DFA’s P100-million emergency fund to help in the continuing repatriation of Filipinos affected by the deteriorating security situation in Libya, Syria, Iraq, and Gaza.
