Bicol Charity Foundations Loses Financial Assistance From PCSO

The marginalized poor and the needy, will feel the effect of the PCSO

Seven charitable foundations and institutions in the Bicol region had been cut-off of their monthly and quarterly funding by the numbers gaming agency Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO). Many more similar institutions around the country suffered the same funding stoppage.

This was revealed by chairwoman Margarita Juico who said the PCSO learned that financial assistance are used on salaries of personnel, electricity and water bills, gasoline and transportation expenses, among other things.

In an interview by a leading daily, Juico said instead of using the aid for the purchase of much-needed medicines, health-care products and food items, these institutions had been using the funds for “administrative expenses.”

The seven Bicol charitable entities loses funding which amount to P2.66 million. Many of these are run or guided by religious organizations.

Including the fund assistance that was stopped, three of these are in Naga city like the St. Louise de Marillac Foundation (P800,000); Missionaries of the Poor Heart of Mercy Monastery and Formation Center (P400,000); Daughters of Mary Mother of the Church (P200,000) while one is based in Iriga city, the Servants of Jesus of Charity (P300,000);

Also affected are Sta. Luisa de Marillac Foundation of Libon, Albay (P400,000); Ladies of Charity of Sorsogon city (P400,000); St. Louise de Marillac Foundation of Sorsogon city (P320,000); and the Oblate Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Vinzons, Camarines Norte (P240,000).

It is more likely that cutting off funding on charitable institutions geared at serving the poor and needy Bicolanos is an anti-poor and unpopular move for the embattled PCSO. Also, these institutions will have to learn to accept the consequence of less funding and cope with what meager resources they have and maintain the same service to the deprived populace of the region.
