Republic of China’s (Taiwan) former vice president Vincent Siew arrives in Manila Monday afternoon for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ summit this week.

Siew, who was widely recognized for the “economic miracle” in his nation, will attend the high level meetings in behalf of Chinese Taipei President Ma Ying-Jou.

The Chinese Taipei representative, together with his wife Susan Chu, arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 at 1:36 pm, aboard a China airlines airplane.

Upon his arrival at the airport, Cabinet Secretary Jose Rene Almendras and Manila Economic and Cultural Office chair Amadeo Perez welcomed him.

It is Siew’s “continuous efforts” that led to Chinese Taipei’s membership in APEC in 1991. He had already attended a total of six APEC summits both as minister of economic affairs and presidential representative.

The Philippines follows the One China Policy which considers Taiwan as part of Mainland China. With this policy, only a representative of Chinese Taipei, and not its president, is allowed to attend the APEC meetings.
