smileredunhappyFor lack of proper monitoring standard, an official of DepEd Bicol summarily said there were no major problems met on the first day of school in various provinces and cities of the region.

Spokesperson Mayflor Jumamil said the education department had prepared for “Balik Eskwela” this school year with 973 TLS (temporary learning spaces) units for 402 schools ready for use.

The glaring fact that there were 973 TLS, in place of regular classrooms, is already a problem on the onset of the opening day.

Imagine your child under a TLS with galvanized iron sheets as roof and partition of plywood materials for temporary classromm is disturbing enough. That is frying and toasting the young minds of eager learners every school day. School administrators have enough experience how hot and humid a regular classroom could be, what more of TLS.

Students will have to wait for mercy to come until a permanent classroom could rise which may take ages to build.

While Typhoon Nina ravaged classroom units in the provinces in December, not much effort was done to compensate the reconstruction.

In fact, in the school year past (after the typhoon), the students in Albay, Catanduanes and Camarines Sur were already made to suffer because of that want for learning facility already. And that was six months ago.

So yesterday, about 1.8 million students were welcomed to the public education system both in elementary and high school in Bicol, not to discount the fact that the number could surge with additional late enrollees and transferees.

And there was no problem monitored during the first day of school opening at all.
