The Vatican will canonize the Blessed Mother Teresa in Vatican, September 4, 2016. She was born on August 6, 1910 in Skopje (now Republic of Macedonia), then part of the Kosovo Vilayet in the Ottoman Empire, into a Kosovar Albanian family. After having lived in Macedonia for eighteen years, she moved to Ireland and entered the Loreto abbey. In 1946 she started the Missionaries of Charity in Indi which later became a religious congregation in 1950, the same year she began to be called Mother Teresa. The congregation is now active in 133 countries. The congregation run hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens dispensaries and mobile clinics, children’s and family counselling programs, orphanages and schools.

This after Pope Francis recognized the second miracle attributed to former founder of the Missionaries of Charity based in Calcutta, India.

The road to sainthood of the beloved mother culminates today. The religious ceremony is part of the celebration of Pope Francis’ Jubilee year of mercy.

The Congregation of the Causes of Saints acknowledged the miraculous healing of a man from Brazil with multiple brain tumors to Mother Teresa.

She was known as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta of the Roman Catholic religious sister and missionary.

She was born on August 6, 1910 in Skopje (now Republic of Macedonia), then part of the Kosovo Vilayet in the Ottoman Empire, into a Kosovar Albanian family.

After having lived in Macedonia for eighteen years, she moved to Ireland and entered the Loreto abbey.

By 1929 she moved to Calcutta, now known as Kolkata, where she became a teacher, later head mistress at a convent school after fifteen years.

In 1946 she started the Missionaries of Charity which later became a religious congregation in 1950, the same year she began to be called Mother Teresa.

The congregation is now active in 133 countries.

The congregation run hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens dispensaries and mobile clinics, children’s and family counselling programs, orphanages and schools.

Mother Teresa was the recipient of numerous honors, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

She died of a heart ailment on September 5, 1997 in Kolkata.

In late 2002, the Vatican ruled that an Indian woman’s stomach tumour had been miraculously cured after prayers to Mother Teresa.

By 2003, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II as “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”.

Pope John Paul II wanted to declare her a saint immediately, bypassing the beatification process, but was dissuaded by cardinals.

In December 2015, Pope Francis opened the way for her canonization by approving a decree recognizing a second miracle attributed to her intercession with God, the healing of a Brazilian who recovered from a severe brain infection in 2008.
