CEBU CITY — The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center again grasped the news limelight, but on a different angle.

The detention center in the premier city of the south used to be famous with the dancing inmates in years past. But a new series of controversies engulfed CPDRC which include the discovery of illegal drugs, stash of cash found, and other contraband during a predawn raid at the facility last Saturday.

Caught in the controversy is Jail Warden Romeo Manansala who resigned on tuesday. Manansala handed his resignation to Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III shortly before noon.

Reports surfaced of existence of conjugal room inside the jail operated for rent, raising of gamecocks inside the jail and many others.

By some coincidence, Manansala’s original appointment as acting warden has also lapsed and needs renewal and reappointment. Previously he occupies the post of assistant warden.

The embattled official clarified he quit his post as acting warden due to health reasons and not because of last Sunday’s dawn raid that uncovered drugs, cash and contraband within the cells.

Manansala has been a jail warden for four years and has served as a jail official for 35 years at CPDRC.

As Manansala’s resignation take effect on Friday, Aug. 19, he will be transferred to the Cebu Capitol’s civil security unit. (PNA report)
