Five dead as monsoon rains cause floods and landslides

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Sunday reported that five people died due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rain brought by the southwest monsoon.

Identified as fatalities, include Benedict Brasileño, 68, resident of Barangay Canauiklian, Janiuay, Iloilo, who died due to drowning while crossing Malbug River when he was swept by a strong current around 6:00 a.m on Wednesday and his body was retrieved around 10 a.m. on the same day.

On Friday at around 8:40 p.m., a body was recovered at Nagtahan Pumping Station while on Saturday two persons reported dead due to a collapsed firewall along Oroquieta Street, Sta. Cruz Manila.

Also on Saturday, one person reported dead due to collapsed wall of shanty house located at 7th street Barangay Mariana, Quezon City.

The agency also reported one injured person identified as John Harry Parco Ocera, 38, resident Robinson Homes East, Antipolo City, Rizal who sustained injuries on his legs after he was hit by large falling mountain rocks along Ortigas Ave., Extension, Barangay Dolores, Taytay Rizal on Friday evening.

One missing person also reported a certain Ruben Pahilagmo, 57, of Barangay Bognuyan Gasan, Marinduque, was reported missing after he went fishing last Aug. 8.

NDRRMC said that 15,665 families or 70,266 persons were affected in Regions 3, 4-A, 6, NIR (Negros Island Region) ARMM and NCR.

Of which 5,139 families or 24,225 persons sought shelter in 52 evacuation center.

A total of seven road sections are not passable due to flooding and landslides one in Benguet (Bugias-Tinoc Road); three in Bulacan (Manila-North Road, Old MNR, San Fernando Section); and three in Pampanga (Jose Abad Santos Ave., and Northwest Diversion Road).

A total of 65 passengers are still stranded in Coast Guard District in Southern Tagalog.

Those stranded include one vessel and four motor bancas.
