If you watched attentively during the 3rd and last presidential debate held yesterday at the Phinma University of Pangasinan, then you should have heard of candidate Grace Poe’s promises.

Independent candidate Sen. Poe vowed to create a government that is sensitive to the needs of the suffering Filipino people, the immediate solution of the worsening traffic problem in Metro Manila and insist on the Philippines’ claim to the disputed West Philippine Sea, saying it is not a personal aquarium of China.

Traffic

”I will appoint a secretary as ‘traffic terminator.’ His only function is to monitor every project that should be finished immediately, like the right-of-way,” Poe said

For the immediate solution of the worsening traffic problem, Poe said discipline should be instilled to everyone, particularly to the drivers. ”We need discipline. Our roads are not personal parking lot of our countrymen. We should enforce the law,” Poe said.

She said there is also a need to intensify the road clearing and widening to reduce traffic congestion.

The lady senator said the South Luzon Expressway and the North Luzon Expressway connector road can help if it will be finished immediately. For the long-term solution, Poe said a subway system can also help in solving traffic congestion.

She said the Philippine National Railways (PNR) should be extended to Dagupan City and the line to Bicol should be revived. She also believes that Cebu and Mindanao, particularly in Cagayan de Oro City, should have their own Metro Rail Transit.

”There are many plans but not implemented immediately, like projects where bidding alone lasts for three years,” Poe said.

On the West Philippine Sea Dispute

”The West Philippine Sea is not personal aquarium of the Chinese. That’s ours,” Poe said in answer to the question of fisherman Mang Karlo, on how the presidential candidates will help the fishermen being harrased by the Chinese coast guards affected by the territorial dispute.

Poe wants to equip fishermen with radio so that the government can help immediately if harazzed by Chinese intruders even as an increase in visibility and protection can be made by increasing the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ships that will patrol the Philippine territory.

Poe said the Philippines “should also encourage our allies; if they are really our friends, they should help us and we should not give up our WPS’s claim.”

A government sensitive to the needs of the Filipino people

”We don’t want a government which is insensitive, which does not listen to the demands of our countrymen and blind to the poverty problem,” Poe said in her opening statement where the candidates were asked on how they would describe the Philippines after their term’s end in 2022.

Poe vowed to leave a country where families can send their children to schools and free from hunger.

(with reports from PNA)
