Video: Pope Francis celebrate Holy Mass on Ash Wednesday

This is the live stream direct from Vatican City featuring the observance of Ash Wednesday in the Catholic world.

Scheduled for Feb 10, 2016, Pope Francis presides at Holy Mass, which signal the beginning of Lent. The celebration starts at 4:30 PM, Vatican time.

The event will also be highlighted with the Rite of the blessing and bestowal of the ashes and the sending out of the Missionaries of Mercy.

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday. Lent is characterized by penance, work of mercy and personal preparation for renewal of baptismal promises on Easter vigil.

The ashes on Ash Wednesday reminds everyone that we are dust and to dust we shall return and that the entire life of a Christian should be marked by works of self-denial and generosity.
