Ban on firecrackers up to Congress as report of New Year injuries climb

Malacañang is leaving proposals on total ban on firecrackers up to Congress, as it is the one authorized to amend Republic Act No. 7183 or the law regulating the sale, manufacture, distribution and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices.

Meanwhile, the number of fireworks-related injuries during the New Year revelry reached 760 as the 15-day monitoring and surveillance by the Department of Health -Epidemiology Bureau (DOH-EB) entered its 13th day on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016.

This developed after the Department of Health (DOH) recorded over 760 firecracker-related injuries during the New Year revelry.

Meanwhile, the number of fireworks-related injuries reached 760 as the 15-day monitoring and surveillance by the Department of Health-Epidemiology Bureau (DOH-EB) entered its 13th day on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016.

A total of 427 case were from the National Capital Region. Aside from piccolo, other causes were due to kwitis (88 cases), least known firecrackers (74 cases), luces (45 cases), and 5-Star (30 cases).

Of the total cases, 628 were males with the youngest victim was a nine-month-old baby while the oldest was 78 years old.

More than half of the victims (464 cases) sustained hand injuries, as the firecrackers that exploded hit portions of hands. A total of 113 victims sustained eye injuries. About 25 cases required amputations of body parts like hands, fingers, feet and legs..

Majority of the victims or 534 cases were active igniters while the remaining were only spectators.
