Malacanang on Friday defended the P10-billion budget for the hosting of the 2015 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), by saying it is the country’s economy that will benefit most from the amount that the Philippines invested for the prestigious event.

”For the attendance alone, it is expected that more or less 10,000 people including 3,000 media delegates, will participate in the APEC. Each one of them will spend that will go directly to our economy,” Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. explained.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indonesia President Joko Widodo will not attend the meeting. The rest of the leaders of the 21-nation association will attend the Economic Leaders’ Meeting to be held from November 17 to 20 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Coloma said the P10 billion budget was used for the preparatory events, the facilities and for the meetings that have actually started last January.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development is under scrutiny on its motive of rounding up the homeless resident of Manila for a seminar on Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P’s).

It must be recalled that the same move was allegedly resorted to by DSWD during the Apostolic Visit of Pope Francis in January 2015 when street children and homeless persons were rounded up to a plush resort in Batangas province for a seminaron the same period of the Pope’spresence in Maanila.

Soliman said her department reach out to homeless families to protect them from harm and abuse through Modified Conditional Cash Transfer for Homeless Families (MCCT-HSF) even without the APEC.

The MCCT-HSF is an expanden 4P’s, with a package of assistance to street families for responsive shelter program, access to social services, and economic opportunities. It also extends house rental assistance of up to P4,000 per month for six months to one year.

  1. “The militant Bukluran ng Maggagawang Pilipino (BMP) on Friday slammed the government for wasting P10 billon of the people’s money to host the Apec summit while poverty continued to rise.

The P10 billion spent by the Aquino regime for an elitist forum that represents the interests of the affluent few in the global economy is nothing but a waste of the nation’s coffers,” BMP.
