Tacloban City commemorates 2nd year of Typhoon ‘Yolanda’

Two years today, after super typhoon ‘Yolanda’ ravaged mostly areas in the Eastern Visayas region, the people of Tacloban City and nearby towns will commemorate the event with a string of activities on Sunday, November 8, 2015.

The city government of Tacloban urged survivors to join the Sunday commemoration of those who died and give thanks to those who helped in the recovery process.

The day will start at 4 a.m. with a walk from different locations and converge at the City Convention Center (Astrodome). The contingents expected to join would come from the city hall, Anibong district, northern and downtown areas, and San Jose district.

A Catholic mass folllows at the Astrodome from 5:15 a.m. to 6:15 a.m. and with the ringing of church bells in all churches in the city and sirens blast. At 6:45 a.m., a Yolanda memorial marker will be unveiled near the Astrodome with Mayor Alfred Romualdez expected to address the crowd.

After lunch, there will be a premiere showing of the documentary “Fields of Hope” at Robinsons Movieworld. At 3 p.m., there will be a mass and blessing of a common grave in Basper village, for about 2,000 victims buried in the area.

A candlelight memorial will be staged at 5:30 p.m. along the main thoroughfare in thecity up to Tolosa town. At night, there will be church choirs concert at Sto. Niño Church. A sundown memorial at Balyuan grounds with the release of lanterns and flower offering will cap the full day of commemoratioon.
