Sultan of Brunei departs Manila after successful APEC summit

Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah left the Philippines Thursday afternoon after attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leader’s Summit on Wednesday.

Radio reports said that Bolkiah left at past 3 p.m. Besides Bolkiah, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak left around the same time.

To recall, Bolkiah arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 on Wednesday, at 7:15 p.m.

Bolkiah is one of the world’s remaining absolute monarchs. He is also one of the longest-reigning sultans and one of the wealthiest individuals in the world.

He is also known to have put up 53 percent of the USD 48-million Grand Mosque in Cotabato, the largest mosque in the country. The rest of the cost was shouldered by Philippine government.

Philippines’ hosting of APEC 2015 aims to promote and advance inclusive growth in domestic/national, regional, and macro levels in the Asia-Pacific region.

The 21 APEC member-economies are the United States, Japan, China, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Singapore, Hong Kong-China, Chinese Taipei, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines. (PNA)
