Powerful explosions kill 95, injures many at peace rally in Ankara

At least 95 people were killed and 246 injured after two suspected suicide bombings struck a peace rally Saturday in Turkey’s capital Ankara, the Turkish prime minister’s office said. Some of the wounded are in intensive care, the office said.

The two blasts occurred seconds apart shortly after 10 a.m. in front of Ankara’s main train station as crowds, including labor unions and civic groups, gathered for a rally to protest against the resumed conflict between government forces and the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, according to media reports. UN chief condemns terrorist bombings in Ankara, Turkey

Following the event, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday condemned the bombings in the Turkish capital of Ankara as terrorist acts, extending condolences to the families of the victims.

At least 95 people have been killed on Saturday and up to 246 wounded in the pair of explosions, which targeted a peace rally at the central railway station in the city.

The explosions hit a train station where several unions, civil society organizations and pro-Kurdish People’s Democracy Party were due to hold a rally, according to local media.
