Election violence: Zamboanga Sibugay town mayor killed in ambush; vice mayor, 5 others wounded

First day of filing of certificate of candidacy, and the first recorded pre-election violence occured in Zamboanga Sibugay province.

the town mayor of Tungawan was killed while six others including a vice mayor were wounded in an ambush on the first day of the filing of the Certificate of Candidacy (CoC), the police reported Monday.

Supt. William Gadayan, Zamboanga Sibugay Public Safety Company commander, said initial report showed the incident occurred around 3:50 p.m. Monday in Purok 7, Barangay Cayamcam, Tungawan town.

Gadayan said Mayor Randy Climaco of Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay, was killed on the spot.

Gadayan said wounded were the following: Tungawan Vice Mayor Abison Abduraok; Ernesto Segualan, San Isidro barangay chairman; Charlie Dela Cruz, driver; Fortunato Mangubat; Carlnan Climaco; and Jembot Ricalde.

He said investigation showed Climaco’s group was aboard a pick-up type vehicle traveling from Barangay Batungan to Barangay Libertad in downtown Tungawan when they were ambushed by unidentified gunmen.

He said hours before the incident, Climaco along with his other party mates, has filed his CoC.

Climaco filed CoC for vice mayor as he was serving on his last term as town mayor.

Meanwhile, Senior Insp. Ricardo Pacana, Tungawan police chief, said pursuit operation is ongoing against the suspects behind the ambush.
