VIRAC, Catanduanes, March 20 — Can a bridge connect Catanduanes to the mainland Bicol and facilitate land travel bothways? Cantanduanes governor Araceli Wong made her thoughts ring loud and clear dreaming of the mega infrastructure now called the Friendship-Tourism bridge. Ambitious as it is, the 10.8-kilometer concrete bridge will traverse the Maqueda channel that separates Caramaoan (Camarines Sur) from the island.
The good news is that the Bicol regional development council has approved the previous week the proposal which will endorse the same to the national government for adoption into the countryside development agenda. The proposal will rest on Malacanang for consideration though. Catanduanes is listed as a tourism growth area of the country, will get the necessary boost with the bridge becoming a reality.
It will link the island through Barangay Codon of San Andres town crossing Maqueda Channel to the municipality of Caramoan, Camarines Sur. The distance between these two points would make the project into the longest bridge in the Philippines. The governor said some China-based investors have signified interest in financing its construction. The proposed bridge is five times longer than San Juanico bridge which is 2.16-kilometers linking Samar and Leyte provinces.
