Ebola death toll at almost 8,000 deaths – WHO. The death toll from the Ebola virus is increasing and currently stands at 7,905 deaths, among 20,206 known cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in the statement on Wednesday. Over the past week, Sierra Leone – the country which has been the worst hit by the disease – reported 337 new cases of the fatal virus, the statement added.

‘State of Calamity’ declared in Misamis Oriental. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Jan 1 -– The provincial board of Misamis Oriental has declared the province under the “State of Calamity” as people from the evacuation centers started to return home on Wednesday. The city also declared 22 urban and suburban barangays under the “State of Calamity” in response to the request of barangay officials. Some 11,000 families or 36,000 individuals in the province have been evacuated to 154 evacuation centers at the height of tropical storm “Seniang.”

DPWH constructs detour bridge as ‘Seniang’ damages major link in Misamis Oriental.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Jan. 1 -– The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has constructed a detour spillway bridge in Balingasag town as the rehabilitation of the damaged Mambayaan bridge gains headway. The detour bridge could accommodate light vehicles and passenger buses. The Mambayaan Bridge connects the major national highway road leading to Gingoog City and Butuan City where passenger buses regularly commute to convey passengers 24/7. The mid section of the bridge almost collapsed when the pier settled due to rampaging water as flash flood struck at the height of tropical storm “Seniang” last Monday.

SSS extends services abroad with 20 offices.MANILA, Jan. 1 — State-run Social Security System (SSS) is pushing for wider coverage of Filipinos abroad with 20 Offices now in Asia, Middle East and Europe. The SSS offices, located in Philippine embassies or consulates, accept applications for membership, benefits and loans; and perform data capture for unified multi-purpose ID, SSS said in statement. SSS offices in Asia are located in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Taipei, Brunei, Kuala Lumpur, Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain. SSS offices in Europe are in London, Rome and Milan.

Bats possible source of Ebola in West Africa: Study. BERLIN, Jan. 1 — Bats are a possible source of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, said a study. The outbreak of the Ebola virus disease occurring in West Africa may have originated from contact between humans and virus-infected bats, suggested a study led by researchers from the Robert Koch-Institute in Berlin. The report, published in EMBO Molecular Medicine, also reveals that larger wildlife is not the source of infection. The report identifies insectivorous free-tailed bats as plausible reservoirs and expands the range of possible Ebola virus sources to this type of bats.
