In MLang town of North Cotabato, unidentified men set off an improvised explosive device Wednesday afternoon during shopping rush for New Year in this town’s public market, leaving four shoppers killed and 30 others wounded, officials said.

The victims were on a shopping rush for New Year along fruit stands outside the Mlang public market when the blast occurred at 3:45 p.m., according to Barangay Poblacion Chairman Rafael Porras.

Porras said most of the injured were rushed to Mlang Doctor’s Hospital and Mlang District Hospital. Other wounded victims were rushed to Kidapawan City.

Senior Inspector Joan Resurreccion, Mlang police chief, said most of the victims sustained shrapnel injuries in various parts of the body.

No one has claimed responsibility, the second deadly IED attack in this town since Nov. 23 when three died and 20 others were hurt when a bomb exploded at a billiard hall near the town plaza.

Resurrecion said most of the 30 wounded were hit by shrapnel in lower extremities and feet.

Initial investigation showed the bomb was placed few meters from the entrance of the public market where people mill around buying circle-shaped fruits.

Meanwhile, the death toll on Tropical Storm “Seniang” rose to 59 with most of the fatalities were victims of flash floods and landslides in the Visayas and Mindanao.

As this develops, eight people remained missing while 26 others were reported hurt. “Seniang” has so far affected 52,082 families or 226,883 people.

A magnitude 5.4 struck Batangas and was felt also in Metro Manila on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvocs).

Phivolcs said the tremor occurred at 5:26 p.m. with its epicenter traced 17 kilometers southwest of Calatagan in Batangas.

The tremor was felt at intensity 4 in Tagaytay City, while intensity 3 felt in Quezon City; Paranaque City; Calatagan, Batangas; Batangas City; and Taguig City. (from various PNA updates)
