President Aquino pursues trip to Korea, leaves this morning

MANILA, Dec. 11 — Whoever thought that the president will miss the opportunity of going out of the country for that tempting ASEAN-SK commemorative summit? Many got it wrong, thinking that President Benigno S. Aquino III would rather be in the country and look after the pressing needs or issues brought about by Typhoon Ruby. Naah!

And here’s the update: Due to “encouraging” (????) developments in the aftermath of Typhoon Ruby, President Benigno S. Aquino III has decided to attend the summit between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Republic of Korea on December 11 to 12 in Busan, South Korea.

“President Aquino has decided to push through with the original plan to attend the 25th ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit. This is in keeping with the Philippines’ international commitments to Korea, which has always been a staunch partner and ally, our sister nation in ASEAN, and the rest of the global community,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a statement posted in www.gov.ph.

“As Typhoon Ruby is set to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility, reports from government representatives in the frontlines have consistently been encouraging,” Valte said, attributing the positive developments to the high level of preparedness achieved by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) and concerned local government units.

“Rest assured that the President has been closely monitoring the situation, and will continue to do so, even as he represents the country in Busan. He has full trust and confidence in the members of the Cabinet who have been on the ground since before Typhoon Ruby made landfall, as well as in the NDRRMC, local government units, and other government personnel who are engaged in the task of relief and recovery,” said Valte.

Money is nothing when it comes out from others’ pocket, or the “boss’s” pocket, meaning the people’s money. No savings, after all.
