PILI, Camarines Sur -– Five local government units in Bicol are among this year’s awardees of the agriculture department’s 2014 Pinoy quality corn achievers award.

Named for their performances in implementing the corn program in their localities are Ligao City (Albay), Naga City, and three Camarines Sur municipalities of Baao, Calabanga and Tigaon.

The municipalities and cities will receive P1-million project grant each and an agri-Pinoy corn achiever trophy. The local government agriculturists will receive P30K cash award each.

The coordinatos will also get P25K each and the 17 extension workers will receive P20K cash award and a trophy.

Regional corn coordinator Ed Lomerio disclosed that the judging for LGU category was based on technical requirements such as the corn grain samples in compliance with the maximum aflatoxin level of 50 ppb and minimum Grade No. 3 as per quality grade requirements on shelled corn of the Philippine National Standards for Grains-Corn.

The LGU should attain an annual average corn yield for the past three years of at least 3.5 metric tons per hectare for yellow and 1.5 metric tons for white varieties.

The locality must have alloted 400 hectares or minimum of 200 hectares physically devoted to corn farming.

The Agri-Pinoy search is now on its third year with the award ceremonies scheduled to be held at the Limketkai Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City on October 22 this year. (with report from Emily Bordado)
