The Department of Agriculture selected Bicol Region as the pilot area for climate change resistant or adapting crops in line with the climate change resiliency program of the government.

Agriculture secretary Proceso Alcala on Sunday said the region will also serve as the laboratory for the DA’s quick turnaround planting and production after a typhoon initiative.

He added the regional share of Bicol in the proposed DA budget of P48.4 billion will be P1.9 billion.

Alcala said Bicol deserves the additional funds since the industrious Bicolanos produced P57-billion worth of agricultural products in 2013.

That is why even if the land area of Region 5 is small and it is often visited by typhoons, the ‘Oragons’ ranked sixth in rice production, eighth in hog production, and seventh in coconut and corn production, Alcala said. (PNA)
