LEGAZPI CITY — In an attempt to curb blatant misuse of government ambulance vehicles, which should be solely devoted to transport seriously sick and injured patients for medical treatment, the Albay provincial legislative council on Monday passed an ordinance with accompanying penalty and fine.

The move was prompted with the apparent ubiquitous presence of government-issued ambulances often seen in recreational areas, used as personal or office service vehicle, among others.

The ordinance also thumbed down transporting patients using the ambulance deemed not in a medical emergency situation.

But the rule was relaxed when it comes to official and authorized medical outreach missions and other hospital services and operations related to medical missions, delivery of medicines and other medical supplies.

Public officials or employees caught in violation will be slapped with a P1,000 fine, and, or imprisonment of one month for the first offense.

The second offense carries a fine of P2,500 and or six months of imprisonment.

Third offense merit a fine of P5,000 and or imprisonment of one year, without prejudice to the filing of administrative charge.
