MANILA – As the first day of classes opens nationwide, public school teachers are greeted with the announcement by Malacanang that their desired salary increase will have to wait until next year.

Reposting here newsbrief from The Bulletin Today

Presidential spokesperson Herminio Coloma, Jr. explained that a raise could not happen anytime soon. He hinted, though, the vague possibility that it could be part of next year’s budget.

It must be recalled that teachers mounted a protest last month for not granting them their request.

He further justified the non-grant of increase since “we are in the middle of the year and the budget for this year has already been approved.” (From PNA report by Azer N. Parrocha)

Joy Martinez of ACT-National Capital Region and Dr. Priscilla Ampuan of the Quezon City Public School Teachers Association (QCPSTA) were among the teachers who were fuming after being pushed away from the gates of Malacanang Palace as they tried to demand better pay from the Aquino government. On the opening of classes, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) with the support of youth and students rallied at Mendiola in Manila to air their grievances. Public school teachers plan to take a mass leave to press for their demands
