MANILA, Dec. 16 — Expect heavy rains over Mindanao that may cause flash floods and landslides due to the trough of a low pressure area (LPA), the state weather bureau said on Monday.

PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said that due to the trough or extended clouds of the LPA, Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Aurelio said the LPA was still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

He said that based on their numerical models, the LPA has a slim chance of intensifying into a cyclone but the agency continues to monitor the LPA which will be named “Alamid” in case it intensifies into a tropical depression.

He noted they are still expecting one or two more cyclone to affect the country before the year ends.

Aurelio added the northeast monsoon would affect extreme northern Luzon.

The Bicol region, Eastern Visayas and Aurora and Quezon provinces will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms while Cagayan Valley, Cordillera and Ilocos region will be cloudy with light rains, he said.

He also said the rest of the country including Metro Manila will continue to experience a mix weather from sunny to partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms due to the tail-end of the cold front affecting Northern Luzon.

The agency also issued gale warning as strong to gale force winds associated with the surge of Northeast Monsoon is expected to affect eastern and northern Luzon.

“Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves,” it said.

PAGASA said moderate to strong winds from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the east to northeast with slight to moderate seas. (PNA)
