Juban, Sorsogon (PNA) — A German agency is providing a flood warning system along a major river that serves as flood path of rain water coming from the slope of Mt. Bulusan.

To be put up along Cadac-an River, which stretches from the lower slope of the volcano and traverses several barangays within the municipalities of Juban and Irosin, the flood warning project is to be provided by the Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) or the German Society for International Cooperation.

Cadac-an is a main river system considered as the province’s biggest and longest with its four main tributaries and 16 collateral feeders covering a length of 35 kilometers.

The river originates from the slope of Mt. Bulusan and extends to the Maraot Banwa mountain ranges then stretches to the valley of Irosin and Juban before it flows out to Sorsogon bay.

A memorandum of agreement about the project was signed by Olaf Neussner, the GIZ Disaster Risk Management sector chief, Juban mayor Jaime Fragata and Irosin mayor Jun Ong.

Both towns are situated at the western quadrant of Bulusan volcano, had eruptive spell last year after a three-year period of restiveness.

These eruptions discharged millions of tons of volcanic debris (lahar), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), are stored at the volcano’s slopes and threatening communities near its foot when swept by massive rain waters.

About a hundred families from two barangays of Irosin have already been resettled as a precautionary measure. About 300 other households are evacuated during typhoon and heavy rain situations.
