Pope Benedict XVI has appointed a new bishop for the Archdiocese of Caceres. Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona, OCD, DD., (left) will occupy the post replacing Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legazpi, OP, DD, PhD. (right).
The new archbishop’s appointment was published in Rome with an announcement made on September 8 at 12 noon at the Vatican while outgoing Archbishop Legazpi announced the news during a mass celebrated at the Naga metropolitan cathedral last Saturday.
Tirona, 66, is a native of the town of Kawit in Cavite. He was born on the 22nd of July, 1946. He was appointed apostolic administrator of Malolos on January 1996 and installed Bishop of Malolos in January 28, 1997. He was named Bishop of Infanta on June 28, 2003 and was installed August 27, 2003 at the Prelature of Infanta in Quezon province.
Outgoing Archbishop Legazpi, 76, has led the Bicol Catholics for the past 28 years. He was appointed Archbishop of Caceres on October 20, 1983. He was installed in a solemn ceremonies as the 33rd Ordinary and 3rd Archbishop of Caceres at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist Naga city on January 18, 1984. Archbishop Legazpi was conferred the Palliun by His Grace, the Most Rev. Bruno Torpigliani, D. D., Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines on September 14, 1984.
