Camarines Sur: The Early Beginnings of the Bicol Province

A short historical backgrounder on the beginnings of the first (and the mother of all) Bicol province, established in the southern Luzon peninsula.

The awesome sight of bamboo cum nipa huts the Spaniards saw, camarronchones or camalig or camarins was believed to be the source the early conquiastadores later adopted and simplified into camarines.

But while the island-provinces of Catanduanes on the eastern portion by the Pacific ocean and Masbate group on the southern end are not part and parcel of the peninsula, they make up the grouping of provinces all together known as Region V (FIVE), the Bicol region.
