Quezon Tops PH Cities Annual Income for 2006

A common side-street scene in Quezon city and elsewhere in Mega Manila. The poor are filthy poor, the rich are filthy rich.

The city of Quezon has a land area of 166.20 square km. or 64.2 square miles with a population of 2,679,450 or a density of 16,114/km2 (41,735/sq mi). It is roughly the size of the municipality of Calabanga (163.84 sq. km.) in terms of land area.

Imagine the number of people squeezed in a small piece of PH territory. The highly urbanized QC is an epitome of what a city feels and look like in the country. It has many pockets of affluence in a sea of destitute and poverty.

This writer can’t help but add this noted observation on the deliberation of the 2011 PH budget by the congress. The Aquino government slashed by P2.0B the proposed budget of the National Electrification Administration for 2011. What was left was the P5.1 billion for NEA’s operational expenses only.

P2 billion, according to NEA administrator Edith Bueno, can light up to 1,500 sitios for the coming year.

So that the much hyped boast of the government to fully energize the remaining 30,000 sitios (villages that are within barangays) by 2020 in the PH countryside was all brag and talk without action and logistics support after all.

Of course, these sitios are situated outside the sphere of Metro Manila or Mega Manila but in the far-flung towns and provinces the national government officials visit during election time for another round of promises and sweet nothings.

Here’s the silver lining though: Instead, the Aquino government allotted P7.3 billion subsidy for the fare of “poor” Metro Rail transit commuters. Sweet.

Now back to our regular programming.

In our current year of review, QC still topped the list among all cities of the country, big or small, in terms of population and annual income for the year of 2006. Manila and Makati came in close with both registered earnings of over P7.5B pesos.

Four cities from Mindanao- Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga and Iligan earned over P1B. The queen city of the south Cebu was the only Visayan in the group of 22.

From twenty in 2005, two more LGUs joined the rank of the elite billionaire-earners.

Interesting to check out the table below which of the LGUs made to the list:

The second batch of 22 LGUs earned between P500M but less than P1B. Some of the cities in the list will definitely cross over that billion mark in due time, like Santa Rosa (Laguna), Antipolo (Rizal), Iloilo (Visayas) or General Santos (Mindanao).
