Election Hang-over And Eye Sores

The election was way past many days now and the remnants of the costliest national exercise already part of yesterday, and yet we are still confronted with two strong indications that its scepter and shadow still hovers above our heads.

For one, the much ballyhooed computerization phase- the counting of the manual votes that it would be a breeze like the wind- was a fleeting promise and an idea too good to be true. Many precincts still have not electronically transmitted the results to the proper Comelec office, hence only nine of the supposed twelve senators were just confirmed their election or re-election.

The most trite truth and a cause for our disappointment was that the post for the vice presidency is still a toss between two personalities- a popular and “dark horse” candidate vs. the party mate of the apparent president-elect.

Some things may never change. Always there is the phase where loopholes are taken advantage and the peoples’ will are outright and blatantly subverted.

The second sign that we will have to endure and remind us of the election are the campaign streamers, posters and placards that are now a sore to the eye and a bane to the incoming elementary and high school students. For the non-voters and little ones will take to task the cleanup drive very soon at the opening of school classes this June, in case the cities and towns do not start an outright cleanup.

For the local governments who has enough manpower and budget to do the cleaning, it will be a brisk task. But what of those without? Can we then run after the candidates, losers and winners to lead the drive? Or maybe, next time, way before the official campaign period, these people who desire to run for any public office and will paste their “faces” on walls and every available space should be required to post fund/bond for the projected cost of the clean-up later?

But for now, we have to check out the blue skies with candidates’ faces staring back at us, both winners and non-winners.
