DUCK, COVER and HOLD. Even if it was only a drill, it would be better if participants should/ could fit under the table for their supposed safety. By the looks of it, either the employees are half-hearted in their participation during the drill proper or the tables are too small to fit them under.

The 1st quarter nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill last March 27 wherein Marikina city also participated was hailed as a success. Playing lead roles were partner agencies’ National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), also tasked to strengthen people’s preparedness for emergencies and encourage local government units to build safer communities through the conduct of earthquake drills.

The event has been anchored on raising the awareness on the hazards and risk of earthquakes, testing the preparedness of the communities and various stakeholders and executing and evaluating the effectiveness and interoperability with National Disaster Response Plan for Earthquake and Tsunami, NCR Oplan Metro Yakal and local contingency plan.

The scenario of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake triggered by the West Valley Fault, the worst earthquake case scenario for Metro Manila and nearby provinces, was formed with the results of the Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study 2004 and refined in 2014.

Even if it was only a drill, it would be better if participants should/ could fit under the table for their supposed safety. By the looks of it, either the employees are half-hearted in their participation during the drill proper or the tables are too small to fit them under. The “duck, cover and hold,” practice involving taking refuge under a sturdy table or other furniture until the supposed shaking stops.
